The Dog Days

Ahh...the hot and humid days are here.

Dating back a long, long time, the "dog days" describe what is generally the hottest part of the summer.

The Romans referred to this period as "dies caniculares" or "days of the dog star," which was eventually translated as just "dog days."

For us dog guys, this actually provides a good opportunity for us to get back to the basics that we tend to overlook because there are birds available.

You know...like actually getting the Wonder Lead out and teaching our dogs how to silently cooperate with us, that neglected retrieving and water work, etc.

I am a true believer of most actions between a pointing dog and a birds need to be taught by the bird, but that doesn't mean we need to work birds all the time.

In fact, the most overlooked aspect of dogs I see for training is...obedience. The little stuff such as jumping, trying to bolt out of a kennel without being released, and the recall

This is your opportunity to actually use the weather as an excuse to work on those little things...get after it.
